FURNACE ESTIMATES: WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

Truth: home appliances go out at the most inopportune time. It sure seems that way, right? Case in point: here it is one month after the holidays – when we all saw a hit to the checkbook – and it looks like your home’s furnace is on its last leg. Time for a furnace estimate!

Replacing your furnace will likely be a costly endeavor, but there are some things you can do to make sure you are spending your money wisely. Mast Heating & Cooling—the go-to HVAC expert in the Zeeland, Holland and Grand Rapids areas—stand ready to help guide you through this purchase and installation. We offer a complete line of heating equipment that will provide years of service.

That said, no matter which contractor you ultimately work with, make sure you do your homework and are prepared. Here are some questions our professional technicians suggest you should ask when requesting a furnace estimate:

What size and capacity of furnace does my home need?

The answer will depend on a few factors such as square footage of your home, how well it is insulated, whether it is multilevel, how many windows, etc.

What models offer the highest energy efficiency?

All heating systems come with an Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency (AFUE) rating, which is expressed in percentages. The higher percentage AFUE, the more efficient it is and will need less energy to heat your home. Some furnaces are more efficient than others, so make sure you discuss with your HVAC contractor efficiency ratings and how this can affect your utility bills.

Would my home benefit from any HVAC technologies other than or in addition to a traditional heating system?

Ductless and geothermal systems and a plethora of wireless and remote-controlled thermostat options can increase efficiency and convenience.

Are there any tax rebates offered on new furnace purchases and installations?

Manufacturer, local or federal rebates and tax incentives can add up to big savings. Ask at your estimate what may be available in your area.

Is the HVAC contractor insured and bonded?

This is important and should be stated in any estimate or provided proof upon the proposal.

What guarantees/warranties and maintenance plans come with the installation?

Make sure you fully understand what protections come with your new furnace and make sure they are included in writing in the estimate/proposal.

Will the HVAC installer remove the old unit, haul it away and perform complete on-site cleanup?

Make sure you know the answer to this question up front and it is also in writing before any work is performed.
